Gauze is a commonly used wound care dressing to protect a wound from debris and bacteria to promote healing and is available in a variety of types. Gauze can be used as a wrap to pad, protect, and secure a wound. Wrapping gauze is usually made of cotton, elastic, or nylon and often holds a primary wound dressing in place during the wound healing process. Another type of gauze is referred to as impregnated gauze. This type of gauze wound care dressing is saturated with medicines such as hydrogel, iodine, or antimicrobials to help prevent infection. A gauze sponge is a wound care dressing that is made up of layered gauze squares that work well for prepping, packing, and debriding wounds. Common sizes of absorbent gauze sponges are square 2"x 2" and 4"x 4". Wrapping gauze, impregnated gauze, and gauze sponges all work to protect a wound from bacteria to help reduce the risk of infection and promote an optimal wound healing environment. They are available in both sterile and non-sterile options.
